As Tesla's home turf, the rapid climb in hybrid car sales has become a notable feature of the U.S. auto market in recent times. According to Morgan Stanley's report, in February, the U.S. sales growth rate of hybrid vehicles reached five times the growth rate of electric vehicles.
At the same time, the U.S. market car companies and parts suppliers, also through the upward adjustment of hybrid vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicle production capacity respond to the growing consumer demand. Prior to this, traditional U.S. car companies, including General Motors and Ford, are planning to phase out hybrid technology and learn from Tesla, transforming into a purely electric car manufacturer.
Electric cars in the U.S. are subject to a lot of restrictions
Like China, the U.S. is also geographically vast. This makes the U.S. and China, like Europe, subject to more constraints from outside factors.
Restricted range and imperfect charging facilities give consumers a lot of mileage anxiety.
These will offset the advantages of pure electric models in terms of electricity prices and maintenance costs, while gas prices are inherently cheap in the United States.
On top of that, with inflation figures still at high levels in the US, the vast majority of average consumers don't have much passion for more expensive EVs.
In this case, the rapid rise of Tesla in the United States, more of Musk's aura, and Tesla's models can bring many traditional fuel cars with completely different features and configurations. But Tesla's higher price makes the majority of Tesla buyers affluent people.
For most average Americans, more practical, fuel-efficient pickup trucks and SUVs are the better choice. Not to mention, the cost of hybrid systems is dropping rapidly as production scales up.
At Toyota, for example, the price difference between the hybrid version of its model and the fuel version has slipped from $6,000 to $7,000 in the past to $1,500-$2,000 now. The excess cost is actually easy to make back the difference in the price of the vehicle in a short period of time through fuel savings later on.
Major car companies are rapidly boosting production of hybrid models
From the perspective of car companies, sales of hybrid vehicles are also climbing rapidly.
The plug-in hybrid version of Stellantis' Jeep Wrangler model, a traditional U.S. auto giant, accounted for half of the model's total U.S. sales in the second half of 2023. And demand for Ford's Maverick trucks was even stronger, fueling a nearly 37 percent increase in sales of Ford's hybrids.
As a traditional oil-electric hybrid car company, Toyota in the year-to-date sales of hybrid cars accounted for 37% from 29% last year, Toyota is expected this year, hybrid car sales accounted for 45% of total sales. Based on optimistic estimates of the hybrid market, the next-generation Camry sedan launching in the U.S. will be available only in a hybrid version.
What is the impact of full electrification?
Currently, car companies in the U.S. market other than Tesla, need to think not only about consumer demand and technical feasibility but also the direction of policy, especially since 2024 is an election year in the United States.
The Democratic administration, led by Biden, has given great support to electric vehicles. The U.S. government is even planning to release carbon emission targets for cars this month to push car companies to increase the share of purely electric vehicle sales to 60 percent by 2030.
But the Republican Party, led by Trump, is not so resolute in its EV strategy. Until the policy is further clarified, it is safer and safer for traditional car companies to utilize hybrid technology to reduce carbon emissions.
For Chinese automakers, the door to the U.S. market is not open at the moment. Whether it is from the tariff level or the level of regulations such as ICTS, it is difficult for Chinese cars to enter the U.S. market.
But in a recent public speech, Trump said he would still be willing to give Chinese car companies a chance if they were willing to set up factories in the United States and hire local U.S. workers instead of sending workers from China.
